Why a transparent PNG turns black, and how to fix it

What is actually happening

You cut out the background, but when you open the image in another app the background is solid black or white. Or you post it to social media and a white box appears behind the subject. In most cases the cutout itself worked fine, and the transparency was lost somewhere afterwards.

Transparency is stored separately from color, in what is called an alpha channel. Some file formats and some apps do not carry that data, and when it is dropped the transparent area is replaced with black or white. Before you redo the cutout, find out where it was lost.

Three reasons transparency is lost

First, the file was saved as JPEG. The JPEG format cannot store transparency at all, so the moment you save, transparent areas are filled with white or black. Check that the format was not left as JPEG when you exported or used Save As. This is by far the most common cause.

Second, the app you are viewing it in does not support transparency. The file itself can be a perfectly valid transparent PNG and still appear black or white. Third, some social and chat platforms convert uploads to JPEG automatically. In that case nothing is wrong with your file, only with how it looks after posting.

How to identify the cause

Start with the file extension. If it is .jpg, the transparency is already gone. If it is .png, open the file in a different app or in a web browser. If the browser shows a checkerboard pattern, or you can see through to what is behind it, the file is fine and the problem is the app you were viewing it in.
